The Art of Mammals ABC's from A to Z is truly a unique and beautiful ABC book, written and illustrated by Fred Davis. Packed with bright and bold pictures of some your favorite animals, and some you may learn about for the first time. Playful guinea pigs, sleepy koalas, curious quokka, and hungry raccoons make this an ABC book the whole family will enjoy!
What makes The Art of Mammals even more special is that the author/illustrator, Fred Davis, studied drawing throughout his life and earned his Bachelor's degree in Illustration from the University of Arts in Philadelphia. His life took an unexpected turn in 2017 when he suffered a stroke. Fred was right handed and had to train his mind to use the left side of his body for everyday tasks and movements. All the art you see in this ABC book, was designed, illustrated, and colored by Fred with the use of his left hand.
by Sami Atif
In 1962, Malcolm X rhetorically asked during a speech, "Who taught you to hate yourself from the top of your head to the soles of your feet? Who taught you to hate your own kind? Who taught you to hate the race that you belong to so much that you don't want to be around each other?" Today, a necessary corollary would be to ask, "Who taught you pride?"
Few institutions reveal our societal values more than schools. The national story passed from generation to generation is complete with details of who and what deserve our pride and attention. Sami Atif expands our understanding of how race operates as a function of memory, controlling what we're taught in public and private schools. Beyond that, in Race Pride, School Pride, Atif suggests a pathway for educators to navigate these uncertain times with the conviction of those who overcame overt opposition. It is essential, as Atif contends, for schools to learn the lessons offered by their Black students.
Race Pride, School Pride appeals to many readers, but Atif documents the agency of Black American abolitionists, veterans, educators, students, and their parents in a very particular manner. Interwoven with personal experiences, this work is intimate and academic, historic and forward-thinking, unique and universal.

Tahira K.E. Wilson-Guillermo, M.Ed. is an educator in the Boston area and a new author. She grew up with exhilarating beach trips to York Beach in Maine, and Veteran’s Park Beach in Hyannis on Cape Cod as two regular weekend family and friend jaunts. Later on, ‘The Inkwell’ and South Beach on Martha’s Vineyard; were serene settings where Tahira enjoyed attending parties. When Tahira’s two children were little, she and her husband played and explored with them in the white-capped surges and tide pools at Nahant Beach in Lynn. On alternating weekends, they loved floating under a hot sun while marveling at Mashpee Pond’s dependable clear stillness. Most recently, Fernandina & American Beach on Amelia Island, (introduced by Tahira’s sister and brother-in-law) are Tahira and family’s go-to healing oases. Thus, the beach along with dance, music (Jazz being her favorite) meditation, Haiku, and love, love, love for loving romance, inately make their way into Tahira’s writing. Summer escapes, warm familiar ties, and infusions of urban realities inspired her first novella, Ingress & Egress at Summerset. Tahira was extremely honored to be invited by Roxbury’s Tai Chi Master Heg Roosevelt Robinson, M.Ed. to co-author his autobiography, Healing Self & Community with The Tai Chi Mind: Lessons for Legacy & Life. These two books are being published simultaneously.

Fred Davis is an author and illustrator currently living in Monroeville, NJ. Fred was an aspiring artist all throughout his childhood, taking much of his inspiration from his favorite comic books. He turned his love for drawing into a career path by earning his Bachelor’s degree in Illustration from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia in 2008.
Fred’s life took an unexpected turn in 2017 when he suffered a stroke due to complications from ulcerative colitis, a type of inflammatory bowel disease, which caused a blood clot in the brain. Fred’s stroke led to paralysis on the right side of his body. If you are wondering, the answer is yes…Fred was right-handed. That means, Fred had to train his mind to use the left side of his body for everyday tasks and movements. Of course, that training included the creation of his art as well. Everything you see in this book was designed, illustrated and colored by Fred with the use of his left hand.
Fred’s stroke also left him with aphasia, a language disorder that affects a person's ability to understand, use, or produce language. All of the passages in this book were written by Fred with the idea of helping those with aphasia who want to improve their speech by reading aloud. Fred hopes you enjoy learning about some of his favorite mammals from A to Z through the lens of these unique and vibrant illustrations.
